Senegal film-making pioneer dies.

Ousmane

Sembene Ousmane, father of Senegalese cinema and one of the pioneers of art in Africa, died at his home over the weekend after a long illness at the age of 84. He is credited with making the first feature film by a director from sub-Saharan Africa, 'The black girl from...' in 1966 which he turned into a film two years later, and writing more than half-a-dozen books, many critically acclaimed, including "Voltaiques," a volume of short stories published in 1962. Africa holds self-filming festival in DakarThe "Africa is filming itself" African documentary film festival opened late Monday at the French Institute Léopold Sédar Senghor in Dakar. GBV Film Festial

FilmsDAKAR, Senegal, 27 November - Zimbabwean filmmaker Tawanda Gunda-Mupengo took home the $1,000 first prize in the continent’s largest Pan African Film Festival. Several hundred people gathered at the launch to watch his film, “Spell My Name,”. 84 films from 18 African countries were submitted for inclusion in the festival, organized by UNFPA, to call attention to gender based violence.
