_{Sembene Ousmane, father of Senegalese cinema and one of the pioneers of art in Africa, died at his home over the weekend after a long illness at the age of 84. He is credited with making the first feature film by a director from sub-Saharan Africa, 'The black girl from...' in 1966 which he turned into a film two years later, and writing more than half-a-dozen books, many critically acclaimed, including "Voltaiques," a volume of short stories published in 1962.
